Types of Mesothelioma

The four types of Mesothelioma are only caused by asbestos exposure:

Pleural (lungs), Peritoneal (abdomen), Pericardial (heart) and Testicular.

  • Pleural Mesothelioma (lungs): This type is the most common type of Mesothelioma and affects the lining around the lungs.  Common symptoms include shortness of breath, cough, coughing up blood, chest pains, difficulty swallowing, night sweats, fever, weight loss and fluid buildup around the lungs. This type of Mesothelioma accounts for about 80% of all Mesothelioma cases.
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma (abdomen): This is a cancer of the lining of the abdomen.  Common symptoms include fatigue, nausea/vomiting, weight loss, constipation or diarrhea, swelling of the abdomen and pain in the abdomen.
  • Pericardial Mesothelioma (heart): This is a cancer of the lining that surrounds and protects the heart.  Common symptoms include irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, cough, chest pains, difficulty breathing, night sweats and fever.
  • Testicular Mesothelioma : This is a cancer of the lining of the testicles.  Common symptoms include testicular pain, lumps and swelling.
